DAR has several educational youth programs which promote American history by honoring significant historical people, events, places, and dates. They also teach children the principles of democratic government and promote good citizenship and appreciation of American heritage and history. We accomplish these goals through several programs: the American History essay contest for grades five through eight; the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR essay contest for grades nine through twelve; the Junior American Citizens Club for preschool through grade twelve; and Constitution Week promoted to all ages. We also award five scholarships per year to students graduating from the Washoe County School District.
Our chapter’s 2022 NSDAR Day of Service Book Drive was a very successful event. Our chapter members donated a total of 1,408 books to Spread the Word Nevada in Washoe County. Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing childhood literacy within low-income communities by changing lives one book at a time.
Our Chapter Chair of the Constitution Week Committee presented a Constitution Week program to our community on September 17, 2022.
This Sierra Nevada Chapter, NSDAR, winner of the American History Essay Contest also was the winner of the American History Essay Contest at the state level.

NSDAR petitioned Congress with a resolution to recognize September 17-23 as Constitution Week to educate citizens about our Constitution and its framers. President Eisenhower signed the law establishing this celebration on August 2, 1956. Our chapter works with schools to provide special programs to educate, commemorate, and celebrate our Constitution during this week. If you are interested in finding out more about our chapter’s ability to support and assist local schools in an educational program for Constitution Day, please contact our chapter regent.
The Sierra Nevada Chapter, NSDAR, instituted an annual chapter scholarship program in 2019 whereby five students graduating from the Washoe County School District each receive a scholarship to attend a community college, university, or technical school. To date, fifteen scholarships have been awarded. Our fundraising efforts with Wreaths across America have enabled us to provide these scholarships.
Contact the chapter for more information about this scholarship and to receive a scholarship application packet.
